They plan to live and travel full-time through North America while being sustained by Meghan’s remote office administration job. “I wanted to do travelling”, says Meghan, a single mother, “And I was really frustrated with only having a two-week holiday from the office administration job I was doing. I would see Mollie, we would go on trips together and she would thrive off of travelling and love the experience. She just came out of her shell and was really confident and that’s why I was like ‘how do I give her these fun adventurous things on a regular basis full-time.’” Mollie is diagnosed with epilepsy and in the past has been on medication so that she behaves in school. Meghan did not like how the medication changed her daughter from a lively girl to someone placated and as a result, dreamt of providing a memorable travel experience for Mollie. The nursing station, which Wally’s room is in has an emergency generator to treat patients by the power doesn’t reach his room. A super long finish is also super nice.” What does that mean? ‘Super long finish’? “So imagine eating a caramel, and when you’re done the caramel, you’re still tasting the caramel. That’s the super long finish. In late March, I was walking near the Village in Toronto and a white couple were coming towards me. “You should go home,” the man said as they passed. At first I thought they meant I shouldn’t be walking around. It was early in the pandemic and everyone was nervous. After thinking about it I realized what they really meant—it was anti-Asian harassment in the form of a microaggression. I knew by the scorn on his face. I was born in Malaysia and moved to Canada in the early 80s. I was one of two Asian kids at my high school, which had about 1,000 students. The other Asian was born in Canada. I tried to befriend him but he immediately rejected me. “Don’t talk to me, don’t look at me,” he said. “You don’t exist.” I understand now why he did that, it was self-preservation, because I’m worse, I’m an immigrant. But back then, small things like that constantly reminded me I’m not like everyone else. The experience of being othered has been with me a long time. I’m always wondering if I’m good enough. There’s even a point in my life I convinced myself I was white. It was easier. As a gay, Asian male, I’m very comfortable in my skin. But incidents remind me I’m not the same—I’m an “other”. All it takes is one small thing. That’s how racism works—a lifetime of triggers. In March, due to Covid-19, she lost freelance work as a music teacher and also as a performer for a local production. She fell behind on rent and has not been paying because she wants the landlord to stop sending people to live with her on short notice. He takes a taxi from his Exchange District condo to the Winnipeg airport, where he boards a small plane to the northern First Nation of Pukatawagan. It’s a near weekly journey Wally, 46, has been doing for 14 years. During the week, he stays at the nursing station in his modest-sized room with a mini fridge and a bed. Wally puts on a mask in his dental office to get ready for the day. The night before, the community had a power outage so he sits with the lights off.
